APRIL 6, 2008 - Minutes

The meeting was attended by Shari and Bill Burke, Ken Magee and Kate Murphey. We began by discussing some things that could be done to assist people who wanted to do some gardening. Ken felt that this may be an important emerging issue as food prices continue to rise. He said he has a tiller that is quirky, and he would be willing to go around and till garden areas for people in the meeting. Bill said he would help with that. This led into a discussion about the possibility of having a community garden on church property. Ken said that the old location is limited because of a less than ideal amount of sun exposure. Kate suggested using the front yard of the Friend's House and we all thought that was a great idea. Kate said she would talk to Doug about this. He also thought it was a good idea and suggested that it might be good to use a sod cutter to get rid of the grass before tilling. Ken agreed to consider having the children plant some seeds that could be started indoors to plant in the garden later.

We discussed whether or not to continue the food drive and all agreed that we should. The Food Bank came and picked up the beans and rice that was collected through March. Kate estimated that we had about 300 pounds of food. April is pasta and sauce month. We decided to do macaroni and cheese, tuna, and peas for May. We will continue to keep the Meeting informed about what is going on with that.

Shari volunteered to give First Words on April 20th with the theme "Earth Day" in mind. Faith had wondered to Kate whether we should do something to mark the day. We all thought that the community garden and the offer to till for individual gardens was a good step in that direction, but felt that doing First Words would be appropriate.

We discussed whether to participate in "End Torture Month" in June and it was agreed that we would hang a banner. Kate will be talking to some of the local Catholic churches to see whether they would like to participate as well. We will decide on the banner message (there are a couple to choose from) soon and will let the Meeting know which one we'll be hanging.

There are a few tentative issues still to be discussed further. I will send an update after the next meeting. If there is anything pressing that comes up in the meantime, we will send an email to the group and make an announcement if appropriate.
Until then, go in peace!
